ततः पौरजनाः सर्वे सागरोद्धूतनिःस्वनाः ॥
शिशुमारपुरं प्राप्य न्यविशंस् ते च पार्थिवाः ॥
प्रागुत्तरेण नगराद् भूमिभागे समे शुभे ॥
समाजवाटः शुशुभे भवनैः सर्वतो वृतः ॥
प्राकारपरिखोपेतो द्वारतोरणमण्डितः ॥
वितानेन विचित्रेण सर्वतः समवस्तृतः ॥
तूर्यौघशतसंकीर्णः परार्ध्यागुरुधूपितः ॥
चन्दनोदकसिक्तश् च माल्यदामैश् च शोभितः ॥
tataḥ paurajanāḥ sarve sāgaroddhūtaniḥsvanāḥ ||
śiśumārapuraṃ prāpya nyaviśaṃs te ca pārthivāḥ ||
prāguttareṇa nagarād bhūmibhāge same śubhe ||
samājavāṭaḥ śuśubhe bhavanaiḥ sarvato vṛtaḥ ||
prākāraparikhopeto dvāratoraṇamaṇḍitaḥ ||
vitānena vicitreṇa sarvataḥ samavastṛtaḥ ||
tūryaughaśatasaṃkīrṇaḥ parārdhyāgurudhūpitaḥ ||
candanodakasiktaś ca mālyadāmaiś ca śobhitaḥ ||
"Then all the townsfolk, roaring like a stirred ocean, and those kings, having reached Shishumarapura, settled themselves. To the northeast of the city, on a level, beautiful stretch of ground, the assembly arena shone, surrounded on all sides by buildings, furnished with a rampart and moat, adorned with gates and arches, covered all over with a many-colored canopy, filled with hundreds of musical instruments, perfumed with precious aguru, sprinkled with sandal water and adorned with garlands."

Here the scripture unfolds the splendor of a worldly celebration. It is telling how abundant the pageantry is — canopies, incense, music, garlands: earthly glory displays itself in full brilliance. Yet the stately splendor of the world is fleeting, like a crowded festival — dazzling, but momentary. Thus the scripture shows the grand stage on which Draupadi's choosing will unfold; and behind the outward splendor an event is being prepared that is moved not by pomp but by destiny.
