तत्र नानाप्रकारेषु विमानेषु स्वलंकृताः ॥
स्पर्धमानास् तदान्योन्यं निषेदुः सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥
तत्रोपविष्टान् ददृशुर् महासत्त्वपराक्रमान् ॥
राजसिंहान् महाभागान् कृष्णागुरुविभूषितान् ॥
महाप्रसादान् ब्रह्मण्यान् स्वराष्ट्रपरिरक्षिणः ॥
प्रियान् सर्वस्य लोकस्य सुकृतैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥
tatra nānāprakāreṣu vimāneṣu svalaṃkṛtāḥ ||
spardhamānās tadānyonyaṃ niṣeduḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ||
tatropaviṣṭān dadṛśur mahāsattvaparākramān ||
rājasiṃhān mahābhāgān kṛṣṇāguruvibhūṣitān ||
mahāprasādān brahmaṇyān svarāṣṭraparirakṣiṇaḥ ||
priyān sarvasya lokasya sukṛtaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ ||
"There, in mansions of various kinds, splendidly adorned, vying with one another, all the kings took their seats; and people beheld them, seated there — lion-like kings of great might and prowess, greatly fortunate, anointed with black aguru, greatly gracious, honoring brahmins, protectors of their own realms, dear to all the world for their good and virtuous deeds."

Here the gathering of kings shines not by might alone but by virtue as well. It is telling that the kings are described as "honoring brahmins, protectors of realms, dear to the world for good deeds": true kingship lies in the protection of subjects and reverence for what is sacred, not in splendor alone. Here is the image of a good ruler, loved for his deeds, not for his pomp. Thus the scripture shows that righteous kings are renowned; and among this worthy assembly the contest for the maiden is about to unfold.
