निःशब्दे तु कृते तस्मिन् धृष्टद्युम्नो विशां पते ॥
रङ्गमध्यगतस् तत्र मेघगम्भीरया गिरा ॥
वाक्यम् उच्चैर् जगादेदं श्लक्ष्णम् अर्थवद् उत्तमम् ॥

Here the bride's brother proclaims the condition before the whole assembly. It is significant that Dhrishtadyumna, born of fire, speaks in a voice "deep as a thundercloud": a formidable herald of destiny announcing the trial. Here is the solemnity of the moment on which the maiden's fate will turn. The text thus presents the herald of the svayamvara; and into the settled silence will sound the challenge that separates the worthy from the unworthy.
