मत्प्रतिज्ञाविघातार्थं धार्तराष्ट्रैः किलाच्युत ॥
पृष्ठतः सैन्धवः कार्यः सर्वैर् गुप्तो महारथैः ॥
दश चैका च ताः कृष्ण अक्षौहिण्यः सुदुर्जयाः ॥
प्रतिज्ञायां च हीनायां कथं जीवेत मद्विधः ॥
दुःखोपायस्य मे वीर विकाङ्क्षा परिवर्तते ॥
द्रुतं च याति सविता तत एतद् ब्रवीम्य् अहम् ॥
matpratijñāvighātārthaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ kilācyuta ||
pṛṣṭhataḥ saindhavaḥ kāryaḥ sarvair gupto mahārathaiḥ ||
daśa caikā ca tāḥ kṛṣṇa akṣauhiṇyaḥ sudurjayāḥ ||
pratijñāyāṃ ca hīnāyāṃ kathaṃ jīveta madvidhaḥ ||
duḥkhopāyasya me vīra vikāṅkṣā parivartate ||
drutaṃ ca yāti savitā tata etad bravīmy aham ||
"To thwart my vow, the sons of Dhritarashtra, they say, O Achyuta, will keep the Sindhu king tucked away in the rear, guarded by all the great chariot-warriors. Those eleven akshauhinis are hard to overcome, O Krishna; and should my vow go unfulfilled — how could one such as I live? With the means so difficult to achieve, O hero, anxiety grips me, and the sun moves swiftly on — that is why I say this."

Arjuna names a threefold constriction: the hidden enemy, the eleven akshauhinis, and the relentless course of the sun — for the vow is bound to a deadline before sunset. "Pratijñāyāṃ hīnāyāṃ kathaṃ jīveta madvidhaḥ," "how could one like me live, should the vow go unfulfilled?" — for him, failure is equal to death. It is significant that his anxiety is not fear of battle but fear of breaking his word. The verse teaches that for the faithful, the heaviest burden is not danger but the possibility of breaking a vow; and that time, flowing toward sunset, is more fearsome to one who has given his word than any enemy.
