धनुर् बाणश् च शत्रुघ्नं तद् द्वंद्वं समपद्यत ॥
ततो जगृहतुः प्रीतौ धनुर् बाणं च सुप्रभम् ॥
आजह्रतुर् महात्मानौ ददतुश् च महात्मने ॥

Then those two great serpents, by the majesty of Rudra giving up [their] form, turned into that pair -- into a bow and a foe-slaying arrow. And then the joyful [heroes] took the brightly-shining bow and arrow, brought them, great-souled as they were, and gave [them] to the great-souled one.

The fearsome serpents, "rudramāhātmyāt hitvā rūpam", "by Rudra's majesty giving up their form", turn into a bow and an arrow: what had terrified becomes, by God's grace, a gift. It is telling that threat and gift are one, transformed by grace. The devotees, having passed the test of prayer, obtain what they sought. The verse teaches that by the Lord's grace even the most fearsome thing is transformed into good: the guardian becomes the gift, the trial becomes the reward; and what seemed an obstacle turns out to be the very thing sought, once the soul has passed it not by force but by devotion.
