The names bring opposites together: 'hantre goptre,' 'destroyer and protector' -- the same one is honored as both the one who destroys and the one who shields. 'Trinetraya,' 'the three-eyed,' is a sign of all-seeing. It is telling that the praise does not shrink from calling God both the fearsome 'vyadha,' hunter, and the benevolent protector: the supreme holds both sides. The verse teaches that God is beyond the human division into gentle and fearsome: He is both destroyer and protector; and mature faith honors Him in fullness, not choosing only comforting names but accepting both His fearsome and His gracious nature.
