तद् आचड्ढ्वं ज्ञातिकुलानुपूर्वीं; पदं शिरःसु द्विषतां कुरुध्वम् ॥
प्रह्लादयध्वं हृदयं ममेदं; पाञ्चालराजस्य सहानुगस्य ॥
पाण्डुर् हि राजा द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः; प्रियः सखा चात्मसमो बभूव ॥
तस्यैष कामो दुहिता ममेयं; स्नुषा यदि स्याद् इति कौरवस्य ॥
अयं च कामो द्रुपदस्य राज्ञो; हृदि स्थितो नित्यम् अनिन्दिताङ्गाः ॥
यद् अर्जुनो वै पृथुदीर्घबाहुर्; धर्मेण विन्देत सुतां ममेति ॥

yad arjuno vai pṛthudīrghabāhur; dharmeṇa vindeta sutāṃ mameti ||
"'So tell us the lineage of your family; set your foot upon the heads of your foes and gladden the heart of the king of Panchala together with his kinsmen. For king Pandu was a dear friend to king Drupada, equal to himself; and it was his wish: “may this daughter of mine become the daughter-in-law of the Kaurava.” And this desire always stood in Drupada's heart, O ye of flawless bodies: that Arjuna, broad and long-armed, might by dharma obtain my daughter.'"

Here an old-standing hope is revealed, sealed by an old friendship. It is significant that Drupada's wish goes back to his friendship with Pandu: the friendship of fathers hopes to continue in the kinship of children. Good bonds seek to be strengthened through marriage: affection longs to become kinship. It is significant that the father names Arjuna directly: his heart had long since chosen this son-in-law. Thus the scripture shows fidelity to an old friendship and Drupada's cherished hope; and the priest's embassy brings the Pandavas not an interrogation but open arms.
