नारद उवाच
ततो देवर्षयः सर्वे सिद्धाश् च परमर्षयः ॥
जग्मुस् तदा पराम् आर्तिं दृष्ट्वा तत् कदनं महत् ॥
ते ऽभिजग्मुर् जितक्रोधा जितात्मानो जितेन्द्रियाः ॥
पितामहस्य भवनं जगतः कृपया तदा ॥

tato devarṣayaḥ sarve siddhāś ca paramarṣayaḥ ||
jagmus tadā parām ārtiṃ dṛṣṭvā tat kadanaṃ mahat ||
te 'bhijagmur jitakrodhā jitātmāno jitendriyāḥ ||
pitāmahasya bhavanaṃ jagataḥ kṛpayā tadā ||

Translation
Narada said: "Then all the divine sages, and the siddhas, and the supreme sages fell into extreme grief, seeing that great slaughter; they, having conquered anger, subdued themselves and their senses, went to the abode of the Grandsire — out of compassion for the world."

Here compassion moves the saints to intercession. It is significant that the sages who have subdued themselves go not for their own sake but "out of compassion for the world": mercy toward the suffering is the seal of the righteous. Here is seen the truth that the ascetic is not shut up in his own peace but grieves over the troubles of others. Thus scripture shows the active mercy of the saints; and their intercession seeks help from the Grandsire.
