लालप्यमानं तम् ऋषिं मन्दपालं तथा वने ॥
लपिता प्रत्युवाचेदं सासूयम् इव भारत ॥
न ते सुतेष्व् अवेक्षास्ति तान् ऋषीन् उक्तवान् असि ॥
तेजस्विनो वीर्यवन्तो न तेषां ज्वलनाद् भयम् ॥

lapitā pratyuvācedaṃ sāsūyam iva bhārata ||

Translation
Vaishampayana said: “To the sage Mandapala, thus lamenting in the forest, Lapita replied with this, as if in jealousy, O Bharata: ‘You have no care for your sons: you yourself called them seers, brilliant, valiant — they have no fear from the flame.’”

Here jealousy colors the speech of the present wife. It is telling that Lapita speaks sharply “as if in jealousy”: a jealous heart discerns love for a rival even behind anxiety for children. One sees how jealousy distorts judgment. Thus the scripture reveals Lapita's bitterness; and it will turn into an open reproach.
