विश्रान्तास् ते महात्मानः कं चित् कालं महाबलाः ॥
आहूता धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शांतनवेन च ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेय निबोधेदं वचो मम ॥
पुनर् वो विग्रहो मा भूत् खाण्डवप्रस्थम् आविश ॥
न च वो वसतस् तत्र कश् चिच् छक्तः प्रबाधितुम् ॥
संरक्ष्यमाणान् पार्थेन त्रिदशान् इव वज्रिणा ॥
अर्धं राज्यस्य संप्राप्य खाण्डवप्रस्थम् आविश ॥

āhūtā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā śāṃtanavena ca ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteya nibodhedaṃ vaco mama ||
punar vo vigraho mā bhūt khāṇḍavaprastham āviśa ||
na ca vo vasatas tatra kaś cic chaktaḥ prabādhitum ||
saṃrakṣyamāṇān pārthena tridaśān iva vajriṇā ||
ardhaṃ rājyasya saṃprāpya khāṇḍavaprastham āviśa ||
Dhritarashtra said: "Having rested for some time, the great-souled and mighty ones were summoned by Dhritarashtra and by King Bhishma, son of Shantanu. 'Together with your brothers, O Kaunteya, hear this word of mine: let there be no strife among you again; settle in Khandavaprastha. And none among the living will be able to oppress you there, protected by Partha as the gods are by the wielder of the thunderbolt. Having received half the kingdom, settle in Khandavaprastha.'"

Here the kingdom is divided — but not wholly in good conscience. It is telling that Dhritarashtra, in giving "half," allots the Pandavas the wild Khandavaprastha: a concession is made, but with cunning stinginess, under the pretext of avoiding strife. Here is a half-good, in which truth is mixed with self-interest; yet even this barren portion the Pandavas will accept in peace, without dispute. Thus the text reveals the king's incomplete justice; and the meekness of the Pandavas will turn even a wilderness into paradise.
