Having heard in the first chapter a mention of Samantapanchaka (Kurukshetra), the sages wish to learn about it in detail. Their unwavering eagerness to hear (shrotum icchamahe) is the image of a true listener: genuine devotion begins with a thirst to attend to the word about the Lord and about the holy places tied to His deeds. This very field -- Kurukshetra -- is sanctified as the place where the Bhagavad-gita was revealed, so the question about it carries the narrative toward the Lord.
