एतत् पर्वशतं पूर्णं व्यासेनोक्तं महात्मना ।
यथावत् सूतपुत्रेण लोमहर्षणिना पुनः ॥
कथितं नैमिषारण्ये पर्वाण्य् अष्टादशैव तु ।
समासो भारतस्यायं तत्रोक्तः पर्वसंग्रहः ॥

अनुवाद
This whole hundred of sub-books was told by the great-souled Vyasa; and duly recounted again by the suta's son, Lomaharshana, in Naimisharanya. And the major books number eighteen. Such is the summary of the Bharata; in it the Parva-samgraha (survey of the books) has been set forth.

A summary is given: the Mahabharata consists of a hundred sub-books gathered into eighteen great books. The chain of transmission is especially marked: the epic was composed by Vyasa (an incarnation of the Lord), and it was recounted in Naimisharanya by Lomaharshana — the suta, father of Ugrashravas, our narrator. Thus knowledge descends through succession (parampara), from teacher to disciple, and so is kept undistorted. The orderly division into books and the presence of such a survey testify to the wondrous order of the work; and its true purpose, as the whole survey has shown, is to lead the listener to the Lord.
