The Sambhava-parva ("births") reveals a great mystery: countless divine and other beings descend to earth — this is the "descent of portions" (aṃśāvataraṇa). Behind it lies the design of the Lord: for the restoration of dharma and for His own pastime, He arranges the appearance in this world both of gods and of His eternal companions, and in due time descends Himself. Here too is the story of the Vasus, reborn from the Ganga (one of them to become Bhishma). Thus the Sambhava-parva shows that the great events of the world are no accident, but part of the providence of the Supreme, who through many descents prepares the stage for His own deeds.
