प्रसुप्तं निशि विश्वस्तं जघ्नुर् यौधिष्ठिरं बलम् ॥

At the end of that very day, Hardikya (Kritavarma), Drauni (Ashvatthama), and Gautama (Kripa) at night slew the army of Yudhishthira, deep asleep and unsuspecting.

The war ends in a black atrocity: the three surviving Kuru warriors cut down the Pandavas' sleeping, unsuspecting soldiers by night. Adharma, having lost in fair battle, sinks to the depths of infamy — the killing of the unarmed and the sleeping. This is the last flare of darkness before the triumph of dharma. But even here stands the law of retribution under the Lord's watch: those who committed so grave a sin (Ashvatthama above all) will bear its punishment, as was said in the first chapter. Thus a deep truth reveals itself: having turned away from the Lord and from dharma, a person loses all humanity.
