The Vana-parva marks the years of exile, filled not with despondency but with the hearing of holy and instructive tales. The Pāṇḍavas are visited by the Vṛṣṇis (Kṛṣṇa's kin) and the Pāñcālas — devotees are not left in distress. Śiva Himself, the greatest devotee of the Lord, tests and blesses Arjuna, granting him weapons. And the tale of Nala and the faithful Damayantī teaches steadfastness in misfortune: just as Damayantī never renounced her husband in adversity, so the soul must not abandon dharma and the Lord amid trials. Thus exile becomes a time of satsaṅga and śravaṇa — hearing that strengthens devotion and prepares one for the triumph of dharma.
