The second rung is named: ten upaniṣads. These are the ten called in India daśopaniṣad, expounded by Śaṅkara: Īśā, Kena, Kaṭha, Praśna, Muṇḍaka, Māṇḍūkya, Taittirīya, Aitareya, Chāndogya, Bṛhadāraṇyaka. Worth noting that this list remains basic to this day: one begins with it, and it stands first in our own collection too.
Add what is said of the fruit: māmakaṃ dhāma yāsyasi, «you will go to my abode». Worth noting the word dhāma, «abode, dwelling». It was noted at Jābāli (16) and Muktikā (1.20) that «no return» is a negation, and that in Gītā 15.6 it stands with the word «abode».
Here the same: the fruit of reading is named not «dissolution» and not «cessation», but coming to a dwelling. That is, even where this book leads toward kaivalya, «aloneness», its language remains the language of place and arrival. Add the word cirāt eva, «soon», literally «after some while».
It means the matter is not instantaneous: it is promised not at once but after a period; and this honesty, I think, is worth noting in a book that two verses above promised sālokya to an evildoer for a single name. That is, the book distinguishes: the name works at once, knowledge — over time.
