त्रय एवं समं यावन्नाभ्यस्ताश्च पुनः पुनः । तावन्न पदसम्प्राप्तिर्भवत्यपि समाशतैः

It is said sharply: even after hundreds of years — samā-śataiḥ, «hundreds of years». That is, time by itself gives nothing: one may practice for a century and not move, if it is done separately. Worth noting how contrary this is to the usual promise.
Ordinarily it is said: do it long, and it will come out. Here: do it long and correctly, or it will not come out even in a hundred years. Add what the Vaishnava side holds at this point, which is its constant remark.
It says: even correct doing is not enough, for love is not the fruit of correct doing; and its own list ends not with effort but with kṛpā, «grace». But it too grants that one must reach grace, and that the path to it is a path of effort; and hence it accepts this rule as a rule of the road, not a rule of arrival. Add the phrase pada-samprāpti, «attainment of the place».
The word pada means «place, foot, footstep»; and it was said at Varāha (4.41) that viṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam is «the highest footstep of Viṣṇu» — that reached by his third step. That is, even in this chapter, which is entirely about working with oneself, the goal is named a place one comes to; and the book will end, as we shall see, with that very verse about the highest place of Viṣṇu.
