A definition of the second kind is given: asamprajñāta, «without cognition». Here the mind's movements no longer flow but are praśānta, «stilled»; and the two kinds according to Patañjali were spoken of at Varāha (4.38). Let the main point be repeated from there, for this is its place.
The first is also called sa-bīja, «with seed», the second — nir-bīja, «without seed»; and in Patañjali's school the second is counted higher. The Vaishnava side holds the first, and its argument was cited there: «with seed» means not that the seed of the round of existence remains, but that there is something to look upon; and the seed of the round of existence is desire for oneself, not the presence of an object. Add the words yogīnāṃ priyaḥ, «dear to yogīs».
Worth noting this reservation: it says not «highest», but «dear to yogīs»; that is, the book itself notes that this is the preference of a particular order of people, not an indisputable summit. This detail, I think, is worth attention and is rare in such a book. Add what it grants us the right to say without dispute against the text: what is dear to yogīs is dear to them, and to devotees another is dear; and it was said at Varāha (5.74) that the accomplished are described in some as motionless, in others as shaken.
