Here is a verse where eight books stand in a row, and every one of them we have read; worth noting that their order here is exactly ours. Tārasāra (93), Mahāvākya (94), Pañcabrahma (95), Prāṇāgnihotra (96), Kṛṣṇa (97), Yājñavalkya (98), Varāha (99) — and between Kṛṣṇa and Yājñavalkya stands Gopālatapanī, which we read thirteenth, for it is among those Baladeva cites. That is, the list runs evenly, and by it one can see we have come to its end.
Worth noting too that this verse is the most Vaishnava in the whole list: of eight names, four are directly Vaishnava — Tārasāra, Gopālatapanī, Kṛṣṇa, and Varāha. Add briefly what each is remembered for. Tārasāra — three feet by the three Vedas, and eight mantras of Rāma and his companions.
Mahāvākya — the four great sayings and the rule not to tear them from the narrative. Pañcabrahma — the five faces of Śiva and a numbering snare in the cross-references, because of which the reading order had to be declared by hand. Prāṇāgnihotra — the sacrifice carried inward, and food as oblation.
Kṛṣṇa — where sad-goṣṭhī, «conversation with the honest», is named the means. Yājñavalkya — the rule of renunciation, with ten verses against women, of which it was necessary to speak plainly. Varāha — two hundred forty-eight units and two reworkings of Gītā verses in opposite directions.
