Worth noting that Jābāli stands last here; and this is the very book we read as the hundred-and-fourth, and which our list of the Muktikā calls «the Jābāla of the Sāmaveda». That is, this distribution confirms what was taken on trust when it was examined separately: it does indeed belong to the Sāmaveda and differs from the Jābāla of the Śukla-Yajurveda standing in the second distribution. Add the invocation of the Sāmaveda: āpyāyantu mamāṅgāni vāk prāṇaś cakṣuḥ śrotram atho balam indriyāṇi ca sarvāṇi.
Translation: «May my limbs be filled — speech, breath, eye, ear, and also strength and all the senses». What is asked is the filling of the limbs, and they are named by name. That is, before reading one asks not about the spiritual and not about the mind, but that the body work: that speech sound, the eye see, the ear hear.
This detail, I think, is beautiful and worth stating. It means that learning was conceived as a bodily matter: one hears with ears, repeats with voice, sits with body; and hence one asks first of all about the instruments. The Vaishnava side holds precisely this, and it was said at Varāha (5.37) that the body is put to use, not merely arranged; and it was said at Varāha (5.20) that in its usage the body is laid out by members of service — tongue, ears, hands, feet, head.
