The verse is obscure, and this must be said plainly: in this witness it is not restored with certainty, and the first half of its second part is corrupted. Apparently the sense concerns the order of ascent: sambhava-vyatyaya-kramāt, «by the order of arising and reversal» — that is, passing through a series of principles first downward, then upward. This device is known in sāṅkhya and yoga and is called pratiprasava; and it is the same one underlying what was examined at Varāha (5.19–5.31), where the elements were laid out through the body.
Add what is worth noting in the prescription itself. One is told to contemplate yaśaḥ, «glory», alongside «the unimpaired» and «consciousness-bliss». This word is unexpected here: among abstract definitions stands glory, that is, what is heard of someone.
It was noted at Hayagrīva (2.4) that śravas, «glory», means literally «what is heard», and that it is given by speech and does not exist without speech. That is, even in a list of the abstract, the language sets down a word that requires someone about whom it is heard. The Vaishnava side points to such words constantly, and its own occupation is kīrtana, «glorification»; and it is worth noting that it is from the same root.
