Worth noting the verb cālyate, «is stirred», from cal, «to move, to tremble». It is said: the awareness is all-pervading, and it is the breath that stirs it. That is, the light is one and steady, and it is that which carries it that trembles; and this is exactly the image examined at Varāha (3.20): the sun is reflected in a pail, the water is shaken — the reflection trembles, and the sun stands still.
Let the main point be repeated from there, for it is to the point here. This comparison explains at once two circumstances that otherwise do not fit together: the disturbance is real, and the awareness is not disturbed. And add what the Vaishnava side draws from it: if the water trembles, the work must be done with the water, not with the sun; that is, with the body and breath, not with consciousness.
This explains why in its usage there is so much of the bodily: they sing with the voice, bow with the body, rise at an appointed hour, walk in procession. Add the word citta-ekāgrya, «one-pointedness of mind», literally «single-pointedness». It was examined at Śāṭyāyanī (14), where ekāgra stood with the word bhakti; and there it was noted that the gathering of the mind is not a technique but a property of the relation.
That is, here too: the point is single not because it was sharpened, but because there is a single goal.
