Worth noting that the list contains the Sītā-upaniṣad, and this is worth stating. This book is devoted to Sītā and speaks of her as prakṛti, the primal power; that is, it is a Vaishnava answer to the Śākta books read last. In it Sītā is named threefold: icchā, kriyā, and jñāna — will, action, and knowledge; and the world is explained as her manifestation at Rāma's side.
That is, the Vaishnavas too have their own class of books about the goddess; but in it the goddess is always someone's, and it was said at Bahvṛcā (2) that the difference here lies not in greatness but in the order of the words. Add Śarabha, for it is curious. Śarabha is a fabled eight-legged beast, stronger than a lion; and this book is Shaiva: in it Śiva, in the form of Śarabha, overcomes Nṛsiṃha.
That is, in the list of the hundred and eight stands a book where Śiva defeats a form of Viṣṇu; and this is worth noting, so it is not thought the list was compiled one-sidedly. The compiler included even what stands against him; and this, I think, does him credit. Add Mahānārāyaṇa: it is the concluding portion of the Taittirīya-āraṇyaka, extensive and ancient, and in it stands the famous na veda-vin manute taṃ bṛhantam, which was examined at Hayagrīva (1.4).
