The list of a hundred and eight begins, and it will occupy ten verses; it is worth saying beforehand how to read it. The names in it are given abbreviated and fitted to meter: not «Īśā-upaniṣad» but simply īśā; not «Taittirīya» but tittiri. This is the usual device of verse lists: a name is compressed to what is needed for recognition and set into the meter.
Hence some names in it are disputed: the same abbreviation was read differently by different copyists, and lists of the hundred and eight differ slightly across editions. We hold to the order our list gives, and the books on this site are arranged by it. The first ten are named here, and these are the very daśopaniṣad spoken of at the twenty-seventh verse: Īśā, Kena, Kaṭha, Praśna, Muṇḍaka, Māṇḍūkya, Taittirīya, Aitareya, Chāndogya, Bṛhadāraṇyaka.
That is, the list begins with that ten which suffices at the second rung; and it is built so that its first names are the chief ones, and further on come those of declining familiarity. Add what is worth noting about this order. It is not accidental and not by Veda: by Veda they will be laid out separately, in the five peace-invocations (1.s1–1.s5).
Here the order is one of ordinary importance; and hence this list is at the same time a witness to what was read more in that age.
