Worth noting that the goal is named māmakaṃ padam, «my place». It was noted at the first chapter (1.43) that this possessive is constant in this book: my abode, my liberation, my place. Here it stands in a chapter taken from the «Yoga-vāsiṣṭha», that is, in another's text; and its appearance here shows that the one inserting it reworked it to his own, replacing an abstract «that place» with «My».
This detail, I think, is worth attention, for it is the very thing noted at Varāha (4.28), where ātmany evātmanā tuṣṭaḥ was reworked into mayi, «in Me». That is, this device in the Vaishnava reworking of others' texts is constant: the abstract is turned personal by a single pronoun. Add the word saṃkaṭa, «strait», literally «narrow place».
The image is good: the evil state is named not darkness and not filth, but narrowness; that is, that which leaves no room to turn. And this, I think, is an exact description of what a bad habit does to a person: it does not so much soil as narrow, taking away his choice. Add what follows from this for treatment: one is led out of a strait not by cleansing but by widening; and the verses that follow will say exactly this.
