Two conditions of reading are given, and both are worth examining. First: every upaniṣad must be read with its own peace-invocation; and the five invocations will be laid out below by Veda (1.s1–1.s5). Worth saying what a śānti is, for we have cited a hundred and eight of them without explaining.
Śānti-pāṭha is a brief prayer, recited before and after study; and every Veda has its own. For the Ṛgveda — vān me manasi, «my speech is fixed in my mind»; for the Śukla-Yajurveda — pūrṇam adaḥ, «that is full, this is full»; for the Kṛṣṇa-Yajurveda — saha nāv avatu, «may it protect us both»; for the Sāmaveda — āpyāyantu mamāṅgāni, «may my limbs be filled»; for the Atharvaveda — bhadraṃ karṇebhiḥ, «may we hear the auspicious with our ears». Worth noting that nearly all of them are prayers about the shared: «may it protect us both», «may we labor together», «may there be no enmity between us».
That is, before every reading a prayer is spoken for teacher and student at once; and this, I think, is the best indication of how these books were conceived: not as reading, but as a conversation of two. The second condition: to receive it deśikasya mukhāt svayam, «from the mouth of the teacher himself». That is, reading from a book does not count; and it was said at Varāha (5.17) and (5.61) that a book is a reminder for one who has already been shown.
