Worth noting the phrase tīvra-saṃvega, «intense impulse». Saṃvega is a word of Patañjali (1.21): tīvra-saṃvegānām āsannaḥ, «for those of intense impulse, [attainment] is near». It means «swiftness, keenness, drive»; and in yogic usage it names that strength of desire at which the matter moves fast.
That is, it is said: speed depends not on time but on intensity. And it is added: vigatetara-vāsanaḥ, «having left the other habits»; that is, intensity is possible only when the rest has been cleared away. This position, I think, is exact: the strength of a desire is a comparative magnitude, and it is great not in itself but relative to other desires.
The Vaishnava side holds precisely this, and its laulya, «longing», of which Rūpa Gosvāmī spoke, is the same thing: it counts it the sole price for which the highest is given. Its verse on this account is famous: kṛṣṇa-bhakti-rasa-bhāvitā matiḥ kriyatāṃ yadi kuto'pi labhyate; tatra laulyam api amūlyam ekalaṃ janma-koṭi-sukṛtair na labhyate. Translation: «if a mind steeped in the taste of devotion to Kṛṣṇa could be bought anywhere — buy it, wherever it be! Here longing alone is the price; but even that is not obtained by the merits of ten million births».
That is, there too everything is decided by intensity; and it too is named the thing that cannot be acquired.
