Worth noting in this verse Vajrasūcikā, «the diamond needle», for it is, I think, one of the most needed books in the whole collection. It was examined separately; let its content be repeated in two words, for it is to the point here. It asks: who is a brahman? — and goes through the answers.
Life? — but others have life too. The body? — but all bodies are of the same elements. Birth? — and it lists sages born of a fisherwoman, of a servant girl, of a dog.
Knowledge? — but non-brahmans too have possessed knowledge. Deeds? — but all do deeds.
Piety? — but many are pious. And it answers: a brahman is one who knows the self; and no other.
Its title is explained the same way: a diamond needle is what pierces the hardest thing, and the hardest named is the conviction of superiority by birth. Add what is worth noting of Sarvasāra, «the essence of all»: it is a dictionary of concepts, where bondage, liberation, ignorance, knowledge, the four states, and the rest are defined in order. This book is dry and useful; and its presence in the list shows that the list was compiled for students too, not only for the accomplished.
