Worth noting the word śiṣyāya, «to a disciple», said of Hanumān. That is, Rāma calls him his own disciple; and this detail is worth attention in their relation. Hanumān is above all a servant: he carries, searches, fights.
And here he is called a disciple; that is, service and discipleship turn out to be one relation, not two. The Vaishnava side holds precisely this, and its rule was cited at Dattātreya (1.10): in philosophical usage understanding is transmitted and capacity is asked about, in its usage a relation is transmitted and service is asked about. Add the word guhya, «secret».
We examined it at Jābāli (3) and noted that what is stated and what is transmitted must be distinguished. Add here what belongs specially to this place. What is called secret is what is about to be listed aloud — a list of a hundred and eight books, open to all.
That is, the secrecy here lies not in concealment but in something else; and the verses that follow will say in what: not that the list is hidden, but that it is not given to just anyone. The difference between «to conceal» and «not to give» is, I think, the whole difference between a secret and a carefulness; and this was spoken of at Śāṭyāyani (33).
