एतद् इच्छामहे श्रोतुं सर्वम् एव यथातथम् ॥

The sages again ask for an explanation of what they have heard -- now the structure of the "akshauhini", the army division. Their unwavering thirst to hear "exactly as it is" (yatha-tatham) shows the model of a diligent student: not content with the approximate, but striving for clear and complete knowledge. In the tradition, such diligence in hearing is a virtue: it purifies the mind and prepares the heart to receive the higher truths about the Lord, toward which every conversation in this epic ultimately leads.
