The extent of the Sabhā-parva is given — seventy-two chapters and 2,511 verses. The precision of these numbers again shows the orderly structure of the Mahābhārata: every book has its chapters and verses numbered. This order is not an end in itself but a service: it keeps the text undistorted through the tradition and leads the student steadily, book by book, toward the single goal of the entire epic — the glorification of the Lord.
