Here too everything unfolds with the Lord's participation. Arjuna takes Subhadrā, Kṛṣṇa's sister, as his wife "with Vāsudeva's consent" — the Lord Himself seals this kinship with His devotee. And it is together that Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna burn the Khāṇḍava forest; in that same episode Arjuna gains the bow Gāṇḍīva and Kṛṣṇa His discus Sudarśana. This is a clear sign that a devotee never acts alone: the Lord is always at his side, as companion and helmsman. Thus the first great book, for all the abundance of its events and tales, is threaded through with the presence of Kṛṣṇa, who guides the Pāṇḍavas; and its orderly division into two hundred eighteen chapters again bears witness to Vyāsa's wise design.
