The heart of the Udyoga-parva is the choice between Krishna and his powers. Duryodhana, blinded, takes the army and rejects the Lord himself; Arjuna chooses Krishna, unarmed as he is — and in that choice the outcome is already sealed. So the tradition teaches: the devotee longs not for the Lord's gifts but for the Lord himself. Though Krishna is all-knowing and sees that peace will be refused, he still goes himself as an envoy for peace — showing boundless compassion (daya) even toward the wicked, so that none could reproach him. The teachings of Vidura and Sanatsujata on adhyatma show that true victory is inward, found in knowledge of the self and in devotion. And the news of the oneness of Krishna and Arjuna (Nara-Narayana) reveals that behind these events stands the Lord's eternal design.
