These sub-parvas cover the thirteen years of the Pandavas' exile — their life in the forest and the year of hidden residence at Virata's court. Through every trial, their bond with the Lord sustains them. In the 'Kairata-parva,' Shiva himself, the greatest devotee of the Lord, tests Arjuna and grants him a weapon — grace descending from above upon a devotee. In the conversation of Draupadi and Satyabhama (Krishna's queen), two great devoted wives meet, and the subject is a woman's fidelity and dharma. Thus even the years of hardship are described as a time of purification and growing devotion: adversity did not break the Pandavas, for their refuge was Krishna, invisibly guiding them through every misfortune toward the triumph of dharma.
