Rejoicing, having recalled all that was in childhood, both, and looking at one another, laughing again and again — then King Duryodhana spoke to Satyaki, his dear, longtime friend, reproaching his own lot: 'A curse on wrath, a curse, friend, on greed, a curse on blindness, a curse on malice! Cursed be the kshatriya way, cursed be bodily strength — that you aim at me, and I at you, O bull among the Shinis. For you are dearer to me than life, and I am always yours.'

Duryodhana curses wrath, greed, the very kshatriya way that has turned friends into enemies. It is telling that in this moment even he, the instigator of the strife, glimpses its root — you are dearer to me than life. The verse teaches that enmity is contrary to the very nature of loving hearts; and even in the one guilty of the discord a grief awakens over trampled friendship — a bitter flash of truth that it was passion, not the heart, that set them on opposite sides.
