The Panchalas on one side struck Drona with many arrows, while those led by Bhimasena surrounded him on the other side. Among the sons of Pandu there were three upright great warriors -- the twins and Bhimasena -- and they called out to Dhananjaya: "Attack, Arjuna, quickly, push the Kurus away from Drona; then the Panchalas will slay him, once his defense is stripped away." Then Partha suddenly attacked the Kauravas, and Drona [attacked] the Panchalas, led by Dhrishtadyumna.

The Pandavas' plan: to draw off Drona's defenders through Arjuna, so as to expose Drona to the Panchalas. It is telling that to bring down one so formidable, his defense must first be "stripped away." The verse teaches that a besieged center of strength is taken by drawing away its support; and the strategy of the wise is not a frontal blow but the removal of cover -- for even the unconquerable becomes vulnerable once cut off from those who shield him.
