तस्य रूपं बभौ राजन् भारद्वाजं जिघांसतः ॥
यथा रूपं परं विष्णोर् हिरण्यकशिपोर् वधे ॥
सो ऽचरद् विविधान् मार्गान् प्रकारान् एकविंशतिम् ॥
भ्रान्तम् उद्भ्रान्तम् आविद्धम् आप्लुतं प्रसृतं सृतम् ॥
परिवृत्तं निवृत्तं च खड्गं चर्म च धारयन् ॥
संपातं समुदीर्णं च दर्शयाम् आस पार्षतः ॥
ततः शरसहस्रेण शतचन्द्रम् अपातयत् ॥
खड्गं चर्म च संबाधे धृष्टद्युम्नस्य स द्विजः ॥
tasya rūpaṃ babhau rājan bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsataḥ ||
yathā rūpaṃ paraṃ viṣṇor hiraṇyakaśipor vadhe ||
so 'carad vividhān mārgān prakārān ekaviṃśatim ||
bhrāntam udbhrāntam āviddham āplutaṃ prasṛtaṃ sṛtam ||
parivṛttaṃ nivṛttaṃ ca khaḍgaṃ carma ca dhārayan ||
saṃpātaṃ samudīrṇaṃ ca darśayām āsa pārṣataḥ ||
tataḥ śarasahasreṇa śatacandram apātayat ||
khaḍgaṃ carma ca saṃbādhe dhṛṣṭadyumnasya sa dvijaḥ ||
His form shone, O king, craving to slay Bharadvaja, like the supreme form of Vishnu at the slaying of Hiranyakashipu. He displayed various maneuvers, twenty-one ways: whirling, leaping, the raised stroke, the leap, the lunge, the glide, the turn and the retreat, holding sword and shield, the clash and the swing — Parshata displayed [them all]. Then with a thousand arrows he struck down the shield of a hundred moons, the sword and the shield, in the melee — that brahmin [Drona], of Dhrishtadyumna.

Dhrishtadyumna, with sword and shield, displays twenty-one arts of combat, shining 'like Vishnu at the slaying of Hiranyakashipu': the executor of fate is likened to God punishing the wicked. It is telling that even this mastery Drona shatters with a thousand arrows. The verse teaches that even the highest skill of one does not overcome the other when the hour has not struck; and the greatness of the duel lies in this — that both are supreme, and the outcome rests not in strength but in destiny.
