अथान्यत् स समादाय दिव्यम् आङ्गिरसं धनुः ॥
शरांश् च ब्रह्मदण्डाभान् धृष्टद्युम्नम् अयोधयत् ॥
ततस् तं शरवर्षेण महता समवाकिरत् ॥
व्यशातयच् च संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नम् अमर्षणः ॥
तं शरं शतधा चास्य द्रोणश् चिच्छेद सायकैः ॥
ध्वजं धनुश् च निशितैः सारथिं चाप्य् अपातयत् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रहस्यान्यत् पुनर् आदाय कार्मुकम् ॥
शितेन चैनं बाणेन प्रत्यविध्यत् स्तनान्तरे ॥

śarāṃś ca brahmadaṇḍābhān dhṛṣṭadyumnam ayodhayat ||
tatas taṃ śaravarṣeṇa mahatā samavākirat ||
vyaśātayac ca saṃkruddho dhṛṣṭadyumnam amarṣaṇaḥ ||
taṃ śaraṃ śatadhā cāsya droṇaś ciccheda sāyakaiḥ ||
dhvajaṃ dhanuś ca niśitaiḥ sārathiṃ cāpy apātayat ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ prahasyānyat punar ādāya kārmukam ||
śitena cainaṃ bāṇena pratyavidhyat stanāntare ||
Then, taking up another divine bow of the Angirasas, and arrows resembling the staff of Brahma, [Drona] fought with Dhrishtadyumna. Then, enraged, he covered Dhrishtadyumna with a great shower of arrows and kept striking him down, indignant. And Drona cut that arrow of his a hundredfold with his own arrows, and with sharp arrows struck down his banner and bow, and struck down his charioteer. Dhrishtadyumna, smiling, took up another bow again, and with a sharp arrow pierced him between the breasts.

Drona, though doomed, fights "superhumanly," takes up the bow of the Angirasas, cuts down the enemy's arrows: greatness does not leave him even on the threshold of death. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna answers "with a smile" — born to be victorious, he is calm. The verse teaches that even the doomed are worthy of admiration if they fight to the end; and Drona's valor in his last hour shows most brightly how great is the one whom fate overtakes — for death does not diminish but crowns the true warrior.
