दुर्योधन उवाच
क्व सा क्रीडा गतास्माकं बाल्ये वै शिनिपुंगव ॥
क्व च युद्धम् इदं भूयः कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥
किं नु नो विद्यते कृत्यं धनेन धनलिप्सया ॥
यत्र युध्यामहे सर्वे धनलोभात् समागताः ॥
duryodhana uvāca
kva sā krīḍā gatāsmākaṃ bālye vai śinipuṃgava ||
kva ca yuddham idaṃ bhūyaḥ kālo hi duratikramaḥ ||
kiṃ nu no vidyate kṛtyaṃ dhanena dhanalipsayā ||
yatra yudhyāmahe sarve dhanalobhāt samāgatāḥ ||
'Where has that play of ours gone, in childhood, O bull among the Shinis? And where [now] is this battle? For time is unconquerable. What business is it of ours with wealth, with the craving for wealth, since all of us are fighting [here], having come together out of greed for wealth?'

Duryodhana himself pronounces the condemnation of the war: 'what business is it of ours with wealth,' for the sake of which all have gathered to fight. It is telling that the instigator of the strife glimpses, in this moment, its root — greed — and the unconquerable passage of time. The verse teaches that even the guilty can, for a moment, see the futility of what has been done; but insight without a change of course is fruitless — Duryodhana laments yet does not withdraw, and the bitter truth on his lips saves neither himself nor the world.
