तम् आगतम् ऋषिम् दृष्ट्वा नारदम् सर्व-धर्म-वित्tam āgatam ṛṣim dṛṣṭvā nāradam sarva-dharma-vithaving seen the sage Narada arrive, the knower of all dharma,
सहसा पाण्डव-श्रेष्ठः प्रत्युत्थाय अनुजैः सहsahasā pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhaḥ pratyutthāya anujaiḥ sahaat once the best of the Pandavas, rising together with his younger brothers,
अभ्यवादयत प्रीत्या विनय-अवनतः तदाabhyavādayata prītyā vinaya-avanataḥ tadāgreeted him with love, bowing then in humility;
तत्-अर्हम् आसनम् तस्मै संप्रदाय यथा-विधिtat-arham āsanam tasmai saṃpradāya yathā-vidhihaving offered him a seat befitting him, as is proper,
अर्चयाम् आस रत्नैः च सर्व-कामैः च धर्म-वित्arcayām āsa ratnaiḥ ca sarva-kāmaiḥ ca dharma-vithonored him with jewels and all he desired, the knower of dharma;
सः अर्चितः पाण्डवैः सर्वैः महा-ऋषिः वेद-पार-गःsaḥ arcitaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sarvaiḥ mahā-ṛṣiḥ veda-pāra-gaḥhonored by all the Pandavas, the great sage who had mastered the Vedas,

Here the reception of the guest is an image of the honor due to the wise: the king himself rises, bows, seats him, and reveres him. It is significant that Narada begins not with praise but with a question about the threefold aim of life — dharma, artha, and kama: true friendship tests whether a friend lives righteously. Thus the scripture shows the duty of hospitality and introduces the great teaching; and the questioning now begins.
