कच्चित् निद्रा-वशम् न एषिkaccit nidrā-vaśam na eṣiI hope you do not surrender to the power of sleep;
कच्चित् काले विबुध्यसेkaccit kāle vibudhyaseI hope you awaken at the proper time;
कच्चित् च अपर-रात्रेषु चिन्तयसि अर्थम् अर्थ-वित्kaccit ca apara-rātreṣu cintayasi artham artha-vitI hope that in the last hours of the night you reflect on affairs, O knower of profit;
कच्चित् मन्त्रयसे न एकः कच्चित् न बहुभिः सहkaccit mantrayase na ekaḥ kaccit na bahubhiḥ sahaI hope you take counsel neither alone nor with too many at once;

Here the king's virtue is vigilance and timeliness. It is significant that both untimely sleep and slowness in action are condemned, as is counsel taken at extremes — alone or in a crowd: wisdom holds to the middle course and to speed in what is good. Thus the scripture reveals watchfulness and promptness as a ruler's duty; and next comes the conduct of affairs.
