कच्चित् क्रतून् एकचित्तो वाजपेयांश् च सर्वशः ॥
पुण्डरीकांश् च कार्त्स्न्येन यतसे कर्तुम् आत्मवान् ॥
कच्चिज् ज्ञातीन् गुरून् वृद्धान् दैवतांस् तापसान् अपि ॥
चैत्यांश् च वृक्षान् कल्याणान् ब्राह्मणांश् च नमस्यसि ॥
kaccit kratūn ekacitto vājapeyāṃś ca sarvaśaḥ ||
puṇḍarīkāṃś ca kārtsnyena yatase kartum ātmavān ||
kaccij jñātīn gurūn vṛddhān daivatāṃs tāpasān api ||
caityāṃś ca vṛkṣān kalyāṇān brāhmaṇāṃś ca namasyasi ||
"I hope that, with a focused mind and mastery over yourself, you strive to fully perform the [great] sacrifices—the vajapeyas and the pundarikas? I hope that you pay homage to your kinsmen, teachers, elders, deities, ascetics, the auspicious [sacred] trees, and brahmins?".

Here the duty of governance is joined by the duty of reverence—through sacrifice and homage. It is significant that homage is paid not only to gods and brahmins but also to elders, ascetics, and even sacred trees: humility before the sacred in all its forms adorns the mighty. Thus the scripture shows piety as the crown of a king's virtues; what follows is the summation of the whole teaching.
