कच्चित् आचरिताम् पूर्वैः नर-देव पितामहैःkaccit ācaritām pūrvaiḥ nara-deva pitāmahaiḥI hope you follow the conduct observed by former forefathers, O godlike one,
वर्तसे वृत्तिम् अक्षीणाम् धर्म-अर्थ-सहिताम् नृषुvartase vṛttim akṣīṇām dharma-artha-sahitām nṛṣuthe unfailing way of life among men, joined with dharma and artha;
कच्चित् अर्थेन वा धर्मम् धर्मेण अर्थम् अथ अपि वाkaccit arthena vā dharmam dharmeṇa artham atha api vāI hope you do not press dharma with artha, nor artha with dharma,
उभौ वा प्रीति-सारेण न कामेन प्रबाधसेubhau vā prīti-sāreṇa na kāmena prabādhasenor press both — guided by the essence of love, not by desire;
कच्चित् अर्थम् च धर्मम् च कामम् च जयताम् वरkaccit artham ca dharmam ca kāmam ca jayatām varaI hope that artha, dharma, and kama, O best of conquerors,
विभज्य काले काल-ज्ञ सदा वर-द सेवसेvibhajya kāle kāla-jña sadā vara-da sevasehaving divided by time, O knower of time, you always honor, O giver of boons?

Here a twofold charge is set forth: fidelity to the ancestors' path and the balance of the three aims. It is significant that none of them may be sacrificed to another for the sake of desire: dharma, artha, and kama remain in harmony only when what governs is not passion but discernment of time and duty. Thus the scripture reveals the art of measure in a king's life; and next come the foundations of rule.
