He answered them: His throne is a golden eight-petalled lotus, within which are the fiery triangles, and in them the primal syllable, the seed of all; with the obeisance "to Kṛṣṇa", enriched with the seed, having placed the brahman there and duly drawn the Anaṅga-gāyatrī, having girt the earth-circle with tridents — let him worship Him together with the companions headed by Vāsudeva, with His own energies headed by Rukmiṇī, with the gods and kinsmen, with Pārtha and the rest, and with the treasures.

The mantra describes a yantra — the diagram on which worship is performed — and does it in the language of tantric rite, unusual for the Upaniṣads but natural for this book.
The structure of the diagram is this: a golden lotus of eight petals; within it triangles called fiery; in the very centre the primal syllable, "the seed of all". Around the whole, the circle of the earth ringed at its edge with tridents, that is, a protective belt. So every yantra is built: centre, petals, enclosure.
More important than the details is who is placed on this diagram. Not the Deity alone: with Him are set His companions headed by Vāsudeva, His own energies headed by Rukmiṇī, the gods and kinsmen, Pārtha and the other associates, and also the nidhis, the treasures. Worship is conceived from the outset as worship of the Lord among His own.
This is an important trait. The Upaniṣad, which has just described Kṛṣṇa among cowherds, cows and cowherd women, arranges the rite the same way: He is not isolated for veneration. A solitary deity on a throne is not this image.
The "Anaṅga-gāyatrī" is a particular metrical mantra inscribed on the diagram; its name means "the bodiless". Commentators explain the technique variously; the Upaniṣad itself does not linger over the details and in the very next mantra passes to when and with what this worship is to be done.
