He whom tradition knows by his curses here blesses. This is the first of the second part's surprises: near Kṛṣṇa the wrathful sage turns out to be gracious.
The detail "having left some", hitvā, the commentators explain thus: he did not eat everything that was brought — he left some, as honoured remnants are left. In common use such remnants after a holy man are considered a mercy, and the later tradition gives them special weight.
The word āśis means "blessing, benediction": not a reward for the food but a good word spoken over those who fed him.
Anvājñā means "leave to depart": the guest dismisses his guests. Ordinary courtesy, and it is described as circumstantially as the crossing of the river.
This whole episode shows what the Upaniṣad will go on to prove: where Kṛṣṇa acts, the formidable turns benign. In a moment it will appear that the second crossing too is arranged by the same means — a sage's word about himself.
