इति तद् धनुर् आदाय शुल्कावाप्तं महारथः ॥
भ्रात्रा भीमेन सहितस् तस्थौ गिरिर् इवाचलः ॥
ततः कर्णमुखान् क्रुद्धान् क्षत्रियांस् तान् रुषोत्थितान् ॥
संपेततुर् अभीतौ तौ गजौ प्रतिगजान् इव ॥
ऊचुश् च वाचः परुषास् ते राजानो जिघांसवः ॥
आहवे हि द्विजस्यापि वधो दृष्टो युयुत्सतः ॥

iti tad dhanur ādāya śulkāvāptaṃ mahārathaḥ ||
bhrātrā bhīmena sahitas tasthau girir ivācalaḥ ||
tataḥ karṇamukhān kruddhān kṣatriyāṃs tān ruṣotthitān ||
saṃpetatur abhītau tau gajau pratigajān iva ||
ūcuś ca vācaḥ paruṣās te rājāno jighāṃsavaḥ ||
āhave hi dvijasyāpi vadho dṛṣṭo yuyutsataḥ ||

Translation

"So saying and taking that bow, won as the marriage-price, the great chariot-warrior stood together with his brother Bhima like an unmoving mountain. Then those enraged kshatriyas headed by Karna, rising up in fury, were met by the two fearless ones, as two elephants meet rival elephants; and the kings, thirsting for slaughter, spoke harshly: 'For in battle even a brahmin who desires to fight may lawfully be slain.'"
