मननं त्यजतो नित्यं किंचित्परिणतं मनः दृश्यं सन्त्यजतो हेयमुपादेयमुपेयुषः

“…of one who ever leaves off musing, whose mind is somewhat transformed, who relinquishes the seen that is to be rejected and approaches what is to be accepted…”

The list continues, and in it stands a word that removes a false severity: kiṃcit — “somewhat, in part”.
The mind is pariṇata — “transformed” — not wholly, but somewhat.
This is the same sobriety as in 4.116: “even a little of the night has ebbed — and the blackness is thinner”.
The second half deserves examination, because in 4.23 heya and upādeya — “to be rejected” and “to be accepted” — were named the mind's form and the outer.
Here they are used without censure: he rejects the seen and accepts the other.
There is no contradiction; there is a stage. In the middle of the path the distinction is needed; at the end it falls away of itself. To demand of a beginner that he not divide into needful and needless is to leave him without a tool.
