समता सर्वभावेषु यासौ सत्यपरा स्थितिः तस्यामवस्थितं चित्तं न भूयो जन्मभाग्भवेत्

samatā sarvabhāveṣu yāsau satyaparā sthitiḥ tasyāmavasthitaṃ cittaṃ na bhūyo janmabhāgbhavet

“Evenness in all states — that is the standing devoted to truth; the mind established in it shall partake of birth no more.”

The third verse on evenness, and here it receives a definition: satya-parā sthitiḥ — “the standing turned toward truth”.
Note the link. Why is evenness fidelity to truth? Because unevenness comes of preference: this I need, that I do not. And preference always distorts what one sees.
The even man sees things as they are — simply because he wants nothing of them.
The second half gives the fruit: na bhūyaḥ janma-bhāk — “no more partaking of birth”.
This agrees with 2.40: those whose vāsanās are pure have no share in the calamity of birth.
And note once more how modestly the book describes the highest. Not rapture, not union, not a vision of light. Evenness.
