The praise of the gods begins, and the first thing with which they magnify Rāma is kāmarūpa: “taking form at will”.
This word answers the question posed in the seventh verse of the first Upaniṣad. There it was said that for the bodiless Brahman a form “is fashioned for the sake of the worshippers' work”. Here it is said who fashions it: He Himself, by His own will.
This is the Vaiṣṇava reading of that difficult place. The form is not attached to Him from outside by the worshippers' imagination — He Himself assumes it.
The second name is māyāmaya, “made of māyā”. It sounds dangerous: does this not mean the form is phantasmal? But māyā in these books means also “power” and skill; the Śvetāśvatara outright named the wielder of māyā Maheśvara. “Made of māyā” here is “woven of His own power”, not “illusory”.
And the setting is telling: He “stands by the wish-tree”, the kalpataru. This tree grants whatever is asked. The gods came to ask — and found the One they would ask standing beneath that which grants askings.
