The sixth mantra names the Vedas, and names them with everything that attends them: aṅga — the six auxiliary sciences, śākhā — the school recensions, itihāsa — the histories, purāṇa — the ancient tales.
The list is deliberately full. Not only the revelation, but everything that has grown around it: grammar, ritual science, star-lore, the Mahābhārata, the purāṇas.
And it is said: all this is He.
We read the same in the Subāla Upaniṣad, where the Vedas were called the out-breath of the Great Being. But there the speech was of origin; here — of identity.
Why is this needed? Because revelation is easily turned into a code of rules, and a code of rules into a thing without a master. Here it is said: the word of the Vedas is no report about Him — it is He in the word.
The first Upaniṣad said the same of the mantra: “the signifier is Rāma and the signified is Rāma.”
Note too this mantra's place — sixth, right after the gods. The list's order descends: Brahman, bliss, the crossing, the gods, scripture. Next come the living.
